• When writing a definition expository essay, we have three modes we can use to define terms:

• Function • Example • Negation

​Function

• ​ The function strategy demonstrates how the concept/term functions or operates in the real world.

• Example of function strategy: A good friend remains loyal even when it feels like it would be easier to turn tail and run. A good friend uses his sense of humor to cheer me up when I am down. A good friend is willing to listen to me pour my heart out, even at three o’clock in the morning.
