Karst topography refers to natural landscape that is largely the result of chemical weathering by water, resulting in caves, sinkholes, cliffs, and steep-sided hills called towers. These features form when water picks up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and ground to form carbonic acid. Even this fairly weak and dilute acid dissolves carbonate rocks (such as limestone) relatively easily, resulting in dramatic features, even though other nearby rock is comparatively unaffected.

Karst topography in the Dinary Alps

Climate
The Dinaric Karst is located in a humid temperate climate with west winds. The Adriatic Sea and river valleys have a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and wet, fresh winters. The south sides of the Dinaric Mountains have a strong downslope northeast wind called burja (bora).
30
Multiple Choice

Drainage in the Dinaric Karst has been largely diverted into subsurface routes. In some areas, all precipitation may disappear underground, making it difficult to find water for domestic purposes.
