Remember rules for

integer multiplication?

Positive x positive = Positive (+)

Negative x negative = Positive (+)

Positive x negative = Negative (-)

Negative x positive = Negative (-)

3

Division is simply "undoing" multiplication

So...

8/2 ( 8 divided by 2)

could also be 2 x ? = 8

4

That means we have to use the rules for multiplying integers

5

Let's look at 8/2 again

If we use 2 x ? = 8, our rules tell us the answer HAS to be a POSITIVE number

(Positive x positive = Positive)

6

Let's look at the same numbers, but let's make the 8 negative this time

-8/2

This time 2 x ? = -8, so our rules tell us the answer HAS to be a NEGATIVE number

(Positive x negative = Negative)

7

Let's look at the same numbers, but now make the 2 negative this time

8/-2

This time -2 x ? = 8, so our rules tell us the answer HAS to be a NEGATIVE number

(Negative x negative = Positive)

8

Finally, let's make both numbers negative

-8/-2

This time -2 x ? = -8, so our rules tell us the answer HAS to be a POSITIVE number

(Negative x positive = Negative)

9

Let's look at a few examples!
