Unit 4: The Internet Review
by Marvin Tolbert
2
The History of the Internet
Electronic computers were first developed in the 1950s. Networking, which is the connection of computers to one another in order to share and
transmit data, was just being explored in science labs in the U.S., U.K., and France.
3
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web was the ability to link hypertext documents in
information systems and make them available from any node on the
network.
Commercial Internet service providers began appearing in the late 1980s,
and limited commercial entities had private connections to parts of the
Internet by 1990.
4
How does it work
The Internet works by breaking the information you want to communicate,
for example, an email, down into very small parts. These parts are called
packets.
A packet can contain between 1,000 and 1,500 bytes of
information.
A byte is a group of binary digits or bits (usually eight) that is
handled as a unit.
When we send information across the Internet, what we are sending and receiving is a series of packets.
Networks that move data around in the form of packets are called packet switching networks.
5
What is a Web Site?
A website is one or more web pages written in code, usually HTML, that contains the layout, format, and content of each web page.
Web pages are stored on web servers.
6
What is a Domain Name?
A website is identified by its domain name.
A domain name is the address of the website, for example: www.whatisawebsite.com.
Every website has a unique domain name. Ownership of a domain name is purchased for a year or more at a time, and periodically renews.
Owning a domain name is like owning a piece of virtual real estate.
7
What is a Web Browser?
A web browser is a computer program used to access websites on the Internet. You use a web browser to request a particular website or a particular piece of information from a server.
A server is a computer that stores (hosts) websites. Web sites are written in code, often HTML (HyperText Markup Language), and the server is actually only storing the code for your website.
8
Web browser & Websites
Websites are accessed using a web browser, like Google Chrome or Safari.
When you type a domain name into a web browser address bar,
the browser requests the web page from the server where it is stored.
The server sends the web page’s code to the browser.
The browser then interprets the code, and shows you the web page the way that it is intended to look.
9

When you type a web address (called a domain name) into a browser,
the browser looks up the IP address of the domain name, finds the server
where the web pages of that domain are hosted, asks that server for a
copy of the web page(s), receives the web page(s) from the server, and
then interprets the web page(s) code so that you can see the web page
on your screen.
