Finding the Vertex

  • Use the formula to find the x-value.  x=b2ax=-\frac{b}{2a}

  • Example:  y=2x212x8y=2x^2-12x-8

  •  x=(12)2(2)=124=3x=-\frac{\left(-12\right)}{2\left(2\right)}=\frac{12}{4}=3

6

Multiple Choice

y=2x28x+10y=2x^2-8x+10  Find the x-coordinate of the vertex.

1

x=2x=2

2

x=2x=-2

3

x=14x=\frac{1}{4}

4

x=4x=-4

7

Multiple Choice

Given that the x-coordinate of the vertex is 2, what is the axis of symmetry?

1

x=2x=-2

2

(2,0)\left(2,0\right)

3

(0,2)\left(0,-2\right)

4

x=2x=2

8

Finding the Vertex

  • Use the formula to find the x-value.  x=b2ax=-\frac{b}{2a}

  • Once you have found the x-value, substitute in to the original equation find the corresponding y-value.

  • Ex:  y=2x^2-12x-8  where  x=3x=3

  •  y=2(3)212(3)+8=1836+8=10y=2\left(3\right)^2-12\left(3\right)+8=18-36+8=-10

  • So the vertex is (3,-10)

9

Multiple Choice

Given that the x-coordinate of the vertex is 2, what is the y-coordinate of this equation?   y=2x28x+10y=2x^2-8x+10

1

y=0y=0

2

y=2y=2

3

y=4y=-4

4

y=18y=18

10

Finding the y-intercept

  • The y-intercept is at (0,c)

  • Example:  y=4x2+8x5y=4x^2+8x-5

  • (0,-5)

12

Multiple Choice

y=3x25x+7y=3x^2-5x+7
