Terms to Know

- Binary Compound

Compound made up of only two types of elements ( NaCl, Fe2O3)

- Cation

An ion with a POSITIVE charge

- Anion

An ion with a NEGATIVE charge

- Polyatomic Ion ( Poly = MANY)

-
A group of atoms that has one net charge.

6

Naming Binary Formulas

1. Write the name of the cation

2. Write the name of the anion.
3.

- If it’s a n anion, drop the ending and add -ide
- If it’s a polyatomic ion, write the name.

Naming Ionic Compounds with Transition Metals

1. Write the name of transition metal first.

2. Write the oxidation number (charge) of the transition

metal using roman numerals in parentheses.

3. Write the root name of the nonmetal.

4. Add the ending –ide to the root name of the

nonmetal.

Oxidation Numbers

To understand writing formulas for
Ionic Compounds, we must first be able
to identify an element’s oxidation number.

The oxidation number of an element is
the number of valence electrons that
an atom will gain or lose.

Recall that metals will give up electrons
making them a cation ( positively
charged) and nonmetals will take
electrons making them an anion (
negatively charged)
