The greatest common factor (GCF) of two or more numbers is the largest number that divides the given numbers evenly.

12: (on a piece of paper, or in your head if you can, list all the factors of 12 in order, starting with 1, making sure each factor can fit inside of 12 evenly with no remainders)
16: (do the same thing with the number 16)
