Additive Pattern

A pattern where the relationship between the input (x) and the output (y) has a rule that is either adding or subtracting

Multiplicative Pattern

A pattern where the relationship between the input (x) and the output (y) has a rule that is either multiplying or dividing

Strategy

• First, look at your input value and then your output value.

• Did the values increase or decrease?

• By how much?

• Can you add/subtract the same amount with a new set of input and output values? (Is it an additive pattern?)

• If not, can you multiply/divide the same amount with a new set of input/output values? (Is it an multiplicative pattern?)

• Write the rule. Remember to ensure your input (x) performs the operation, and your output (y) represents the solution.
