by Natasha Azani

2

There are 2 types of statements:

  • Positive Statements

  • Negative Statements

media

3

Positive Statements

The sentences are used to show that you agree with the sentences.

4

What is Positive Statements?

A positive sentence usually contains a statement that is a fact.

media

5

The words ‘no’ and ‘not’ do not exist in a positive sentence.

media

6

This sentence can be formed into various tenses, such as past, present, and future sentences.

media

7

Examples of Positive Statements

  • I am going to school.

  • He likes sweets.

  • Malaysia is one of the countries in Asia.

  • He will come tomorrow.

media

8

Negative Statements

Negative sentence is the type of sentence which rejects a statement in that sentence itself.

* Basically, we do not agree with the statement itself.

9

What is Negative statements?

A negative sentence shows us that the statement in the sentence itself is false.

media

10

The words ‘no’ and ‘not’ exist in this negative sentence.

media

11

The positive sentence can be formed into negative sentence by adding the word ‘not’ after the auxiliary (be), such as am, is, are, was, and were

media

12

Examples of Negative Statements

  • I am not going to school.

He does not (doesn't) like sweets.

Malaysia is not (isn't) one of the countries in Asia.

He will not (won't) come tomorrow.

13

For most positive statements...

Ex: There is someone in that room.

When you change to Negative Statements...

you just add:

Verb to be/have/modal verbs + not

Ex: There is not (isn't) someone in that room.

14

Here is another example:

Adira and Ramesh were talking about their homework.

Become:

Adira and Ramesh were not (weren't) talking about their homework.

15

For most of the negative statements, you just need to add 'not' after the verb to 'be' and verb to 'have'

*with the exceptions of sentences that contains main/action verbs.

16

For example...

Farida went for a walk.

* the verb 'went' is the action verb (past tense).

17

When you change it to negative statement...

you use verb to do:

do, does, did + not + root verb

18

So...

Farida went for a walk.

Become...

Farida did not (didn't) go for a walk.

* Here, we used v.t.d. 'did' because the sentence is in past tense.

* We used the verb 'go' because it is the root verb of 'went'.

19

Now remember...

Do : Plural Pronouns/nouns; they, we, I, you, both of the boys

Does : Singular Pronouns/nouns; he, she, it, a boy

Did : Past tense of the verb; all Pronouns/nouns

20

For example:

SN

The little boy cries too much.

>

SN

The little boy does not (doesn't) cry too much.

21

Now, lets us do some brain teasers...

On we go....
