How do we know when to put an s or an es?

Depending on the ending of the word and the sounds at the end....

Words ending in ch, j, s, sh, and x will need the suffix es. When you say the word it says iz at the ending.
If the ending of a plural word says /s/ or /z/ you will only put a suffix of -s.

Three Great Rules

Doubling Rule

When adding an ending like -ing or -ed to the base of a word you need to see if the last letter gets doubled.
The last letter gets doubled if when you add the ending it changes the vowel sound in the base word
Follow your syllabication rules!
Ex: swim + ing = swiming / swim + ing = swimming
