Understanding Multiplication

What is multiplication?

It is an operation of arithmetic used to create a product.

Some terms we will use when multiplying are:

• ​coefficients (which numbers are being multiplied together)

• product​ (the answer to a multiplication problem)

How does it work?

Multiplication is a more complex addition problem.

For example:

12 x 3 = 12 + 12 + 12

4 x 11 = 11 + 11 + 11 + 11​

It's like addition!

We're going to model some multiplication problems, so we can better visualize them for future assignments.

Modeling Multiplication

We create equal groups of our first coefficient, then make enough groups to match our second coefficient.

Arrays​

6 groups of 3 = 6 x 3

We create rows of our first coefficient filled with items that match the number of our second coefficient.

4 rows of 5 = 4 x 5​

We use skip counting on a number line to find our product. Skip count with the first coefficient and skip as many times over as the second coefficient.
