Why were there so many artists?
During the Renaissance, rich Italian nobles and merchants paid artists and writers to create works of art, or literature for them.
This was called "patronage," and the person who paid for the art was called a "patron."
In Florence, the Medici family famously were patrons of many influetial artists and writers.
The Catholic Church also supported or contracted with many artists.
