A character's perspective in a story

Point of View vs. Perspective

• POV tells you WHO is telling the story

• Perspective tells you WHAT and HOW the character thinks or feels.

Types of POV

• 1st Person

• 2nd person

• 3rd Person

1st Person

• 1 character is telling the story

• Uses pronouns: I, me, we, my, us

• Reader only knows what the 1 character thinks and feels

2nd Person

• The narrator is talking to you

• Uses pronouns: you

• Reader only knows what the narrator wants them to know as a character

• rarely used in literature 

3rd Person Omniscient 

• narrator is telling the story

• Uses pronouns: they, he, she, them

• Reader only knows what ALL the characters THINK and FEEL

3rd Person Limited

• narrator is telling the story

• Uses pronouns: they, he, she, them

• Reader only knows what 1 OR 2 characters THINK and FEEL
