How to do it

  • Over here it says 102, now we must multiply 10, twice.

  • As an example, 10 x 10 = 100.

  • So the answer is 100.

  • Another way to do it is just add 2 zeros behind the one.

  • The little 2 behind 10 is called an exponent.

In other words...

The exponent of a number shows how many times the number is multiplies by itself.

7

Example

  • This time, I have laid the equation underneath it.

  • when we multiply, we start with 3 x 3 and get 9.

  • Next we multiply 9x3 because 3 is the next number, and so we get 27.

  • Lastly we get 27 x 3 and get the answer which is 81!

Note* Any time a number has a power of 0, it always is equal to 1.

100 = 1

360 = 1

510 = 1

880 = 1

9

Pronunciation

When we say these powers, we say it like this, " 10 to the 5th power", " 6 to the second power", "4 to the first power".
