The Parties in the U.S.

  • On maps and visuals, the Democratic Party is generally shown as blue. The Republican Party is shown as Red.

  • You might hear states called "Red States," "Blue States," or "Swing States."

  • In a swing state, the two major parties have more-or-less the same level of support, and who the state votes for changes from election to election.

Election Laws

  • The U.S. Constitution (the document where our original laws are written down) says that Election Day is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.

  • The President is elected every 4 years.

  • Senators are elected every 6 years, with a third of the Senate running every two years (1/3rd in 2020, 1/3rd in 2022, 1/3rd in 2024).

  • Members of the House of Representatives are elected every two years.
