Quotation Marks and Commas

2
Quotation Marks
Quotation marks are used to show when someone is talking in text.
Quotation marks will start when someone is talking, and end when they are finished.
Example: Mrs Youngfleish said, "Please do your homework."
3
Punctuation inside Quotation Marks
The most important rule is that ALL punctuation will be INSIDE the quotation marks.
Example: Clint said, "I love to go outside."
Example: "I love to go outside," Clint said.
4
Commas With Quotation Marks
Commas will come before quotation marks if a person states they are talking first.
Example: Jax said, "I don't want to share my toys."
Commas will also come in the quote ONLY when the quote will end with a period and then that the person said the quote.
Example: "I don't want to share my toys," said Jax.

Multiple Choice

Mrs. Youngfleish said "I love to read!"

Exceptions for Commas and Quotations
The only times you can get away from using a comma will be when you are ending your sentence with a exclamation point (!), or question mark (?).
Example: "Do you have to leave?" asked Myles.
Example: "I love teaching!" exclaimed Mrs. Youngfleish.
Notice how you will still end the quotation sentence with a period even with using an exclamation point and question mark.
