What is an Algebraic Expression?
An algebraic expression in mathematics is an expression that is made up of variables and constants, along with algebraic operations (addition, subtraction, etc.). Expressions are made up of terms.
3
Multiple Choice
What makes an algebraic expression?
There is more than one operation
There are variables (letters)
There are only numbers
4
Variables, Coefficients, Constants & Terms
In the expression pictured, x is a variable, whose value is unknown to us which can take any value.
5 is known as the coefficient of x, as it is a constant value used with the variable term and is well defined.
3 is the constant value term which has a definite value
The whole expression has two terms. Terms are separated by addition and subtraction signs.

Translating words in math...
Here are some examples
3 minus the product of 8 and r is written 3 - 8r
18 times w and the sum of 2 and t is written as 18w + 2t
Notice that the coefficient and the variable are written next to each other with no operation sign between them. When you see this it is understood that the operation is multiplication.

32
Solving Equations
Use inverse operation to isolate the variable
Keep the equation balanced by performing the operation to both sides of the equal sign.
33
Solve y +14=20
The inverse operation of addition is subtraction.
Subtract 14 from both sides of the equal sign
20-14=6
y=6
34
Solve x -120 = 80
The inverse operation of subtraction is addition
Add 120 to both sides of the equal sign.
80 +120= 200
x=200
35
Solve 3n=12
The inverse operation of multiplication is division
Divide both sides by 3
12/3=4
n=4
36
The inverse operation of division is multiplication

Vocabulary
Parts of an expression are called terms.
Like terms are terms that have the same variables raised to the same exponent.
Constants are numbers. They are also like terms.
52
Examples:
Non-Examples:
When they are "like terms" you can combine (add) them
53
Like Terms: terms that have the SAME variable(s)
Example: 4x and 17x
Unlike Terms: terms that DO NOT have the same variable(s)
Example: 4x and 17xy
Vocabulary
54
Combine Like Terms: take multiple like terms and make them one
Another word used is SIMPLIFY.

Solving 2-step Equations
62
Our Goal
Isolate the variable on one side of the equal sign
63
Our Strategy
Keep it balanced
What you do to one side, do to the other side
64
Use Inverse Operations to isolate the variable
Inverse of addition - subtraction
Inverse of subtraction - addition
Inverse of multiplication - division
Inverse of division - multiplication
65
Multiple Select
Check all of the equations that require you to use ADDITION to isolate the variable.
g - 8 = 9
y + 5 = 15
d - 2 = 4
r + 6 = 10
m - 9 = 8
66
Multiple Select
Check all of the equations that require you to use SUBTRACTION to isolate the variable.
g + 8 = 9
y - 5 = 15
d + 2 = 4
r - 6 = 10
m + 9 = 12
67
This next equation is going to look a little different...
We are not going to solve it completely yet, but I think we can figure out the first step.
68
Multiple Choice
How would you isolate "4x" in this equation?
4x - 3 = 17
subtract 3 from both sides

Step 2.... 4x = 20
subtract 4 from both sides
add 4 to both sides
divide both sides by 4
multiply both sides by 4
70
