The OUTER PLANETS
I. The four outer planets of the Solar System are separated from the inner planets by the asteroid belt.
Planets are large, shaped like spheres, and have enough gravity to clear their own orbit.
Asteroids are smaller objects made of rock.
Some asteroids are sphere shaped, and are large enough to be called dwarf planets.
Most asteroids are smaller, irregularly shaped objects made of rock and metal.
Most asteroids are found in the asteroid belt.
10
Multiple Choice
What does it mean to "clear their own orbit"?
gravity is weak and is unable to move anything out of the way of the planet's orbit
The orbit of a planet is blocked
gravity is strong enough to get everything out of the way of the planet's orbit
gravity is strong enough to move the orbit of a planet clear out into space

II. All four outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are gas giants.
These planets are many time larger than Earth.
Jupiter’s Great Red Spot, a large storm visible through telescopes, is so large that three Earth’s could fit inside this one storm.
Saturn has large rings that are easily seen (Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have rings, but they are very faint and usually not seen in photographs.)
All of the gas giants have many moons

All planets orbit the Sun. An orbit is a path one objects follows as it moves around another object. The action of moving around another object is called revolution. Planets revolve around the Sun. Moons revolve around planets. Planets and moons also spin on their axis. An axis is the imaginary line through an object on which it spins. The spinning of an object on its axis is called rotation. The Earth rotates once every twenty‐four hours. This is the reason we experience day and night on Earth. One complete revolution around the Sun takes 365 days, or one year.
20
Revolve - 1 year
