During this period, he wrote numerous books, including his most influential treatise on the church, De Ecclesia, written in 1413. In this work Hus emphasized that the state should be able to oversee the actions of the church and that the Church should follow the teachings of the Bible.

Jan Hus Part 3

In 1414 Hus agreed to travel to Constance, Germany, to attend the church council that had been convened to deal with him.

Hus’s teaching had been condemned as heretical by the church, which meant it was something that spoke out against the church, and he naively thought he would have the opportunity to defend himself at the council.

Instead, Hus was convicted as a heretic and imprisoned! After being convicted, the church conducted frequent attempts to force Hus to recant, take back what he said. Hus refused and he was removed from the priesthood and charged with being a stubborn heretic.

His punishment, Hus was burned at the stake on July 6, 1415.

In Comes…Martin Luther

In 1517 Luther penned a document attacking the Catholic Church’s corrupt practice of selling “indulgences” to absolve sin. An indulgence is a piece of paper with the pope's signature that says you're forgiven for your sins.

His “95 Theses,” highlighted two central beliefs one the Bible is the central religious authority and two that humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not by their deeds. Although these ideas had been advanced before, Martin Luther codified them at a moment in history that was perfect for spreading ideas.

His work was the spark to the Protestant Reformation. After, the Catholic Church was divided, and Protestantism soon emerged shaped by Luther’s ideas. His writings changed the course and still impacts religious and cultural history in the West
