Stream of consciousness 6.3.1 page 3

In their efforts to tap into the subconscious, Modernists often rejected the formal structures of writing.

One popular approach was known as stream of consciousness writing, a style that mimics the unstructured flow of human thought. Modernists wanted to reflect the tumble of ideas that humans are subject to moment-to-moment.

4

Internal monologue 6.3.1 page 4

Stream of consciousness writing often comes in the form of an internal monologue, which presents the usually unstructured thoughts passing through the mind of the narrator.

Imagery and Memory 6.3.1 page 6

Writing that features the stream of consciousness technique often results in an outpouring of vivid imagery, bundles of sensory details that come fluttering up from the subconscious.

Images — the ones we encounter in daily life and the ones in our conscious or subconscious mind — are deeply connected to memory, even memories that aren't part of our active knowledge.

Symbols 6.3.1 page 7

A symbol is a tangible thing such as an object, a place or an action that stands for or represents an idea, a belief, or an abstract concept.

If a person dreamed that she was a bird, frantically trying to escape an office where all the clocks ran backward, Freud might say this symbolism suggests the woman feels trapped in her job, and that she feels time is slipping away.

9

Allusion 6.3.1 page 9

An allusion is any reference to something historical, literary, religious, mythical, or popular, such as a well-known story or a legendary person.

An allusion has the power of a hyperlink to an encyclopedia entry. For instance, if a writer names his main character Hercules, you immediately get a certain sense about his personality and start to make predictions: He's strong, he's brave, and he's likely to go through a series of complicated trials, if he hasn't already.
