2
What is force and motion?
Anytime there is a change in motion, force is the responsible party. It has to overcome inertia to act on an object. Inertia keeps an object either sitting still or moving at a constant speed.
3
Vocabulary
Force: any action that changes the shape or movement of an object
Inertia: an object's resistance to any change in motion
Friction: the force that slows down objects when they rub up against each other.
4
Notes
an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by another force
the more friction there is, the more force you need to apply
greater force = greater change in movement
a force is a push or pull that acts on an object
we need forces to set objects in motion

Multiple Choice
What would you need to move a soccer ball?
friction
gravity
force
inertia
7
Multiple Choice
Which of these is an example of force?
watching a slice of bread in the toaster
pulling a casserole out of the oven
listening to your school chorus
taste testing soup cooking on the stovetop
8
Multiple Choice
Which object would require the most amount of energy, or force, to set it into motion?
a school bus
a refrigerator
a microwave
a houseplant
9
Multiple Choice
Your older brother tells you his paper airplane has inertia. What does this mean?
It has too much resistance to fly more than a few feet from his hand.
It is too heavy to stay in the air for more than a few seconds.
It will require a lot of force to get it to fly.
It will stay in flight unless something stops it, or it will stay still unless something moves it.
10
Multiple Choice
What is the name of the unit you use to measure force?
Neutron
Norton
Nucleus
Newton

Multiple Choice
Why don’t skateboarders keep flying through the air when they launch off a ramp?
The force of gravity works against the skateboarders’ inertia.
Skateboard wheels don’t spin fast enough to keep them moving very far.
The skateboarders have no inertia when they launch off a ramp.
Skateboards do not use Newtons to move around ramps.
12
Multiple Choice
What is an example of friction?
slipping on a patch of ice
dropping a book on the floor
diving into a swimming pool
wind blowing against you as you walk
