Slope from Graph
NC.8.F.4
EQ: How can slope be determined from a graph, table or ordered pair?
by Ms. May
2
Let's recap what we already know

3
Recap
Slope is the steepness and direction of a line
slope can be positive, negative, zero or undefined
slope can be determined from a graph, table or ordered pairs
Slope is a ratio of change in y values divided by change in x values
slope must be written as a fraction in simplest form
symbol for slope is m
slope formula is y2-y1/x2-x1 and answer should be written y/x (rise/run)
4
Slope from Graph Steps
5
Example
Find the slope of the graphed line.
What is our first step?
6
Step 1-Plot Points on Line
Plot and label 2 points on the line, anywhere on the line. Remember that the slope of a line never changes, so you can choose whatever 2 points you want and you will always get the same slope.
7
Step 2- Connect Points with Right Triangle
Connect points by drawing a right triangle and Calculate the rise and run by counting units. (You can draw it on the graph if it helps).
*Once 2 points have been plotted ON LINE, you can also just use slope Formula!*
8
Step 3-Write slope as Rise/Run (y/x)
**Pay attention to the TYPE of
slope you have, it should match your answer! Ex. If the graphed line is negative, your answer for slope should also be negative!**

Lets Review our Graph Steps

10
Multiple Choice
When finding slope from graph, what is our first step?
make right triangle
count units
plot 2 points on the graphed line
write slope as y/x
11
Multiple Choice
What is our second step?
connect the points to form a right triangle
connect the points with straight line
12
Multiple Choice
After forming right triangle we can...
count the units for rise and run
find area of the triangle
find perimeter of the triangle
13
Multiple Choice
slope should be written as
(x,y)
x/y
y/x
m=
