Area

FINDING AREA IN SQUARE UNITS

Look at the picture. Each side of the square is 1 unit long. The amount of space taken up by this square is 1 square unit.

The amount of space taken up by this figure is 8 square units. We can also say that the figure has an area of 8 square units.

Area

- is a measure of the amount of space inside a flat shape or figure.

(It is also the number of squares that can fit inside a shape or figure.)

Rita cut out some identical squares from a piece of paper to form Figure X as shown on the screen.

Finding area in standard units

Look at the square. All of its sides are 1 cm long.

The area of this square is 1 square centimeter or 1 cm².

The square centimeter (cm²) is a standard unit of measurement for area.
