2

Rational numbers

  • are ratios of two integers

  • if you can convert a number into a fraction it is a rational number

  • all positive and negative numbers

  • decimals that terminate or have repeating patterns

3

Examples of Rational numbers

  • Fractions:

     225, 57, or 34-2\frac{2}{5},\ \frac{5}{7},\ or\ -\frac{3}{4}

  • Decimals:  0.3, 2.6, or 0.5-0.3,\ 2.6,\ or\ 0.\overline{5}

  • Integers: -10, -2, 0, 4, 25

4

Multiple Select

Select all that are rational numbers

1

0.24

2

-14.2

3

2 152\ \frac{1}{5}

4

56-\frac{5}{6}

5

0.30.\overline{3}

5

Square Roots: perfect squares

  • a number multiplied by itself twice

  • The symbol around the 25 means to square root the number 25  \sqrt{25\ }\

  •  25 = 5\sqrt{25}\ =\ 5

  •  81 = 9\sqrt{81}\ =\ 9

6

Irrational Numbers

  • Cannot be converted into a ratio of two integers

  • Π (Pi) is irrational

  • If a number inside the radical is not a perfect square, then it is irrational.

  •  13\sqrt{13}  is irratonal because there is not a number that multiplies by itself to get 13
