Place Value

refers to the position that a digit occupies in the numeral. Each digit of a number occupies a different position. For example, given the number 28 025; 5 is in ones place, 2 in tens place, 0 in hundreds place, 8 in thousands place and 2 in ten thousands place. The value of each digit depends on its place in the number. On the above example 8 is in the thousands place, therefore the value of 8 is 8 000.

The decimal point

is the most important part of a Decimal Number. Without it we are lost, and don't know what each position means. On the left of the decimal point are the whole numbers. While on the right of the decimal point are the decimal numbers. Likewise, with the whole number, the value of the digit depends on its place value. As we move further left, every place gets 10 times bigger. As we move further right, every place gets 10 times smaller.
