Water Distribution

The hydrosphere is all of the waters on the earth's surface, both fresh- and saltwater. It also can include the water over the earth's surface (think clouds).

Water moves through the hydrosphere using the water cycle. A keep thing to remember is that the amount of water in the hydrosphere is always the same. It might be in different forms but the amount never changes.

3

Multiple Choice

What occurs during the process of condensation in the water cycle?

1

a change in state from solid to liquid

2

a change in state from liquid to gas

3

a change in state from gas to liquid

4

a change in state from liquid to solid

4

Multiple Choice

Which step in the water cycle involves returning of fresh water to the Earth?

1

precipitation

2

evaporation

3

respiration

4

condensation

Multiple Choice

Question image
Which BEST describes how the total amount of water present in the hydrosphere varies over time?
1
The total amount of water in the hydrosphere decreases over time due to the process of evaporation.
2
The total amount of water in the hydrosphere remains the same over time, but changes form due to the water cycle.
3
The total amount of water in the hydrosphere increases over time due to the process of precipitation.
4
The total amount of water in the hydrosphere both decreases and increases over time due to competing processes such as evaporation and precipitation.

6

Where is all of our water?

Most of all the water is located in the ocean which makes it unusable as drinking water for us.

Stewardship and Water Quality

  • Stewardship - taking care of water source

  • pH - 0-14 scale determining how acidic (0-6) or basic (8-14) something is.

  • Temperature - temperature changes can effect aquatic ecosystems.

  • Nitrates/Phosphates - nutrients found in fertilizer

  • Dissolved Oxygen - the amount of oxygen stored in water

  • Turbidity - how clear the water is

  • Bioindicators - specific organisms that are used to judge the health of a water system
