  • Apostrophes show contraction(that a word is shortened by removing letters and replacing them with apostrophes)

    e.g is not ( isn 't) cannot (can't)

  • Apostrophes show ownership.(that someone or something owns someone or somethin)

    eg. The bag belonging to Frank.

1. Read out, circle letters to be omitted, replace with an apostrophe, join together.

​ Rules To Show Possession


Singular Ownership:

1. use( 's ) to show possession.

2. Put ( ' ) before (s) in front of singular owners, if the spelling of the owner's name has no 's'
e.g Jason 's bag
the table's legs.

3. Put (') only in front of singular owners whose name already end with 's"
e.g Moses' pen

Rules to show Possession.
Plural Ownership.

​Remember that some words make their plurals regularly, by adding s while others make theirs . irregularly by changing altogether.

  • Put only (') in front of plural words that end only with an 's' e.g

    the ladies' bags

  • Put ('s) in front of irregular plural words that that do not make plural forms with "s"

    e.g The children's eyes

    The oxen's home.
