Environmental stimuli are anything from the surroundings that an athlete can see, hear, feel, taste, or smell. These stimuli provide information that the body processes to make quick decisions and perform actions in sport

Sensory memory is the shortest type of memory, lasting only a fraction of a second (around 0.5 to 2 seconds). It is the first stage of memory and helps us process information from our senses (sight, sound, touch, etc.) before deciding whether to focus on it.

The attention line plays a crucial role in determining which sensory input is transferred to short-term memory, where it can be processed more deeply.

How Short-Term Memory Works in Sport:

1️⃣ Limited Capacity – Only Holds a Few Things at a Time

  • STM can hold around 5-9 pieces of information at once.

  • Athletes must focus on the most important details to avoid being overloaded.

Chunking is when we group small pieces of information together to make them easier to remember. This helps athletes learn and perform skills more efficiently. What pieces of information is Van Dijk chunking

Chunking where?

Long-term memory (LTM) is where athletes store information permanently, so they can remember skills, tactics, and strategies for future use. Unlike short-term memory, LTM has no time limit – once something is learned and stored properly, it can be remembered for years!

👉 Think of LTM as a playbook – once a skill or tactic is written down (stored), an athlete can refer back to it whenever needed.

A new skill becomes encoded and a motor program is created and stored in LTM. That's why even if you haven't used a bike for several years you would still be able to ride a bike

Like riding a bicycle

Information is retrieved from LTM and decoded to STM then updated and encoded back to LTM (to aid LTM storage)
