1

The problems of climate change on the ocean and how we can prevent it

By Lawrence H

media

2

Climate change is where the earth's normal global and local weather has a long-term shift which is caused by carbon emissions and the greenhouse effect.

What is Climate change?

media

3

Causes: Increased greenhouse gas emissions, ocean absorption of heat and carbon dioxide, melting ice sheets and glaciers, and thermal expansion of water.

Causes and effects

media

Effects: warming oceans, rising sea levels, ocean acidification, changes in the ocean currents. marine heat waves, disrupted ecosystems, and coastal erosion and flooding.

4

Cost-benefit analysis (CBA) in the context of climate change aims to determine the most economically efficient strategies for mitigating climate change by comparing the costs of mitigation actions and the benefits of avoiding climate damages.

What's the C.B.A for climate change?

media

5

Climate change is causing significant economic impacts on the ocean, including losses in fisheries, tourism, and infrastructure, estimated to cost the global economy $428 billion annually by 2050 and $1.98 trillion by 2100.

Economic impacts of climate change

media

6

To combat climate change impacting oceans, solutions include reducing greenhouse gas emissions, restoring and conserving marine ecosystems, scaling up ocean-based renewable energy, and exploring carbon capture and storage technologies.

Possible solutions to climate change

media

7

Implementing costs, policy and regulatory costs, and potential disruption to existing industries.

Costs

climate mitigation, climate adaptation, innovation stimulation, biodiversity protection, and reduced damage costs

Benefits

Cost and benefits of solutions to climate change on the ocean.

8

Poll

Now it's time to quiz! Are you ready? (If most say yes, it will proceed. If most say no, we will review slides again until everyone gets it.)

I'M READY!!!!

I'm mostly ready for the quiz.

I'm little bit ready, just unprepared

I didn't pay attention and needed more time to see the slides. Pwease baby me.

9

Multiple Choice

Climate change happens when...

1

Earth's global and local weather has a long-term shift.

2

Earth's temperature rises and everyone dies.

3

I don't know the answer, can we go back to the slides please?

4

Earth gets invaded by dimwits with plasma blasters

10

Multiple Choice

Which of the following is NOT the solutions to climate change?

1

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

2

Restoring and conserving marine ecosystems

3

Overfishing

4

Scaling up ocean-based renewable energy

11

Multiple Choice

FInish this sentence: Increased greenhouse gas emissions, ocean absorption of heat and carbon dioxide, melting ice sheets and glaciers, and thermal expansion of water. ________.

1

Dropping waste into an open body of water

2

Playing a dangerous game.

Poll

For those who've made it this far, how're you doing?

Great! I feel alive!

Good. I can't say i'm excited.

Bad. Please help me.

Terrible! I WANT MY MOMMY!

14

Poll

Well it's going to get more challenging! There's gonna be questions that aren't on the slides! Think you can handle it?

BRING IT ON! I can handle any questions about climate change!

I can handle most questions off the slide.

I don't think i'll get most of them right.

I'M NEVER GONNA GET ANY OF THEM RIGHT! MOMMY!

15

Multiple Choice

What is the primary cause of rising sea levels?

1

Melting sea ice

2

Melting of land ice and expansion of seawater

3

Expansion of seawater due to warming

4

Increased ocean salinity

16

17

Multiple Choice

What percentage of heat from global warming has the ocean absorbed in the past 40 years?

1

11%

2

35%

3

90%

18

Multiple Choice

What happens to ocean water as it warms?

1

It expands in volume

2

It becomes less dense and sinks

3

It becomes more dense and sinks

4

It remains the same

19

Multiple Choice

(LAST QUESTION BEFORE WE END THIS!) How does climate change affect ocean ecosystems?

1

It leads to increased biodiversity

2

It leads to more stable ocean temperatures

3

It has no impact on ocean ecosystems

4

It causes coral bleaching and habitat loss

20

Poll

How did I do on my presentation on this topic?

Great! It was a pleasure going through this slideshow!

Good. Just needs a little bit of improvement.

Bad. I wish you could make it a little more easier for me

Terrible. I WISH YOU NEVER MADE THIS! MOMMY, HE'S BEING MEAN TO ME!

21

Bad or good. I'm just glad that you tuned in for the show.
