Countable nouns

Countable nouns are things which can be counted. They have a singular and a plural form.

- An apple, two apples, three apples...

- A banana, two bananas, three bananas...


Examples: eggs, oranges, coins, friends, ideas...

Plurals

  • Regular form. Add an "S" at the end of the word (chair --> chairs)

  • Irregular form. They change their form (child --> children)

Uncountable nouns

Countable nouns are things which cannot be counted. They only have a singular form.

- Milk (NOT: a milk, two milks...)

- Rice (NOT: a rice, two rices...)


Examples: water, bread, salt, meat, cheese, fire, homework, advice...

  • These nouns cannot be combined with numbers. If you want to express a quantity, you have to use a special phrase e.g. a glass of water. They never change to plural
