Genres - Categorizing Books

For nonfiction we have...

Biography - written about a person's life by ANOTHER person.
Autobiography - written about a person's life by THAT person.
Informational - has facts, diagrams, drawings, and provides a bunch of information.

Genres - Categorizing Books

For fiction we have...

Science Fiction- futuristic, has science and technology.
Realistic Fiction- fake story that COULD really happen.
Historical Fiction- made up story about a real event in history.
Fantasy- magic, superpowers, wizards and witches.
Mystery- a crime or mysterious event has occurred. Has clues!
Poetry- written in lines and stanzas and often emotional.

Genres - Categorizing Books

For fiction we also have... Folk Tales! These are stories that have been passed down.

Fable- talking animals and teaches a lesson.
Tall Tale- larger than life characters who do the impossible.
Myths- gods and goddess. Explains how things came to be.
Legend- The person or event may or may not have existed!
Fairy Tale - has princesses and princes, fairy godmothers, some magic, dragons, and often has once upon a time or happily ever after.

This is what the story is trying to teach us! It WILL NOT be "about the story", but instead will be the hidden meaning behind the story. Think of it as, "How can I apply this to my life?"
