​We can solve fractional-part-of-a-number problems by translating the question into an equation and then solving the equation. To translate,

we replace the word is with =
we replace the word of with x

​We can translate percent problems into equations the same way we translate fractional-part-of-a-number problems: we convert the percent to either a fraction or a decimal.

​When finding sales tax, it is easier to turn our percent into a decimal instead of a fraction:
