Columbus sets sail
Columbus was a man with a plan!
Europeans had already reached Asia by sailing West across the Atlantic Ocean.
But there was a problem! --> Columbus had the courage.... but not enough money for the journey. Who would help?

Who would help Columbus?
Columbus asked Portugal's king to fund or give money to his voyage. He said no.
Next, he asked the rulers of Spain.
He asked many many times and finally King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed. Then they became his patrons.

It wasn't just one voyage....
Columbus made three total trips or voyages to the Americas.
He traded animals and crops the Tainos.
He also claimed land for Spain. He called this La Isabela which is now the Domenican Republic.
This became the FIRST European town in North America.

Columbus was not the only one.... Two more explorers Hernán Cortés and Ferdinand Magellan also set sail from Spain.
Cortés sailed in the 1500s with a group of conquistadors or Spanish Soldiers. His journey was to Mexico.
He met Moctezuma the Aztec leader. At first, he was happy to see Cortés and gave him gifts.... but that did not last.

Ferdinand Magellan
He set sail from Spain with five ships.
Like Columbus, he was also hoping to reach asia by sailing west.
He travelled south along South America until he found more water that led to the Pacific Ocean.
He thought this would be a quick trip, but intead sailed for 4 months before he saw land. He then reached the Phillippines.
However, only one ship returned back home, but it was the first ship to sail completely around the world.

Juan Ponce de Lèon
Settled the island of Puerto Rico in 1508.
Here he was told myths of a magical spring that could make people young again.
He wanted to find the fountain of youth so in 1513 he set sail again to Puerto Rico.
Then, around Easter he landed in what we now know as Florida.
He named the land "Pescua Florida" which means "Easter flowers" in Spanish.

Léon was most likely the first European to visit Florida.
But Native Americans thought they would lose their land, so they attacked and the settlers left.
Hernando de Soto sailed with 10 ships and 700 men, spending several years exploring what we now know as the southeastern United States.
De Soto learned a lot about the land but also stole food and other valuable items from the Native Americans.

In 1535, Spain established a new colony in North America called New Spain.

Why the new colony?
Settlers moved to New Spain for many reasons.
Spanish officials wanted to set up a government
Roman Catholic Priests wanted to teach the NAtive Americans about Christianity
Other colonists came to start farms and businesses or search for gold and silver

The Perfect Union?
This was not all as it seemed.
The Spanish brought harsh changes to the Native Americans who had lived there for hundreds of years.
Many native people were killed battling the conquistadors.
others died from diseases such as smallpox which was brought to the Americas by the Spaniards.
