Beliefs in Buddhism:
Four Noble Truths - basic instructions that teach there is suffering in the world & humans much reach enlightenment to rise above it
Reincarnation - cycle of birth and rebirth
Do NOT believe in a god, but follow Buddha's teachings
Holy book is the Tripitaka
Goal: to reach nirvana - a state of enlightenment where one can find happiness and peace

mostly practiced in India - 80% are Hindus
Is the 3rd largest religion in the world
Beliefs in Hinduism:
Karma - good or bad behavior in one's life determines his or her position in the next
Reincarnation - cycle of birth and rebirth
Believe in MANY gods & goddesses - are polytheistic
Have many holy books - central text is the Vedas
Goal: to reach moksha - peace & freedom from the cycle of reincarnation

Only practiced in Japan
has NOT spread to other parts of the world
Beliefs in Shintoism:
based on traditional Japanese teaching that everything in nature contains Kami - "the spirit of a god"
follow NO god or NO holy text
must follow daily rituals to help connect to nature & their ancestors
are expected to respect and honor all nature & life
purity is important

is foundation of modern Chinese culture
NOT a religion, but a philosophy
Beliefs in Hinduism:
based on society & traditions
each person has a place on society
based on teachings of Confucius
does NOT follow one god
there are 5 basic relationships & if each one is based in kindness, there would be peace & harmony in China
