Vocabulary

  • Hand Drum: Any type of drum that is traditionally played by hitting with the hands.

  • Hand Position: The way your hands are placed on an instrument when performing.

  • Head: The flat top that is hit to create sound.

  • Mallet: A stick with a ball on the end.

  • Shell: The body of the drum. Where the energy from striking the head of the drum vibrates to make the sound you hear.

  • Posture: How the physical body is positioned while sitting or standing.

Posture and hand position are important when playing any instrument. 

  • Sit tall on the edge of your chair with your feet flat on the floor.

  • Hold the shell of the drum in your non-dominant hand.

  • Gently strike the drum with the fingertips of your hand or with your mallet.

Techniques

A specific way of performing.

 

  • Echo: the performance of a musical phrase followed by the same phrase repeated.

  • Call and Response: the performance of a musical phrase followed by a unique but similar musical phrase

  • Improvisation: music is actively made up during a performance. There are no specific music notes to follow along with.
