Farmers provide most of the food that people eat. However, most people do not live on a farm. The modern food supply chain gets food from the farm and delivers them to the hungry people in the world.
Food Supply Chain
11
Some food needs to be created like bread.
Farmers make the wheat that is then sent to a mill to turn it into flour.
The flour is sent to a manufacturer to make the bread.
We call transforming crops and livestock into the foods you eat food processing.
12
A distributor is a business that receives products form factories and then sells those products to stores.
Food distributors store food for a period of time and then sells large amounts of the food to stores.

YEAR ROUND SUPPLY
We can enjoy our favorite food all year round. Apples grow here in PA in the fall but in the spring, they come from New Zealand who is having fall!
EFFICIENCY
Modern farms are large businesses. They produce large quantities of one type of food making it more efficient and able to produce large amounts quickly.

Let's test your knowledge!

Another disadvantage of modern farming is that much of the food we get is from a factory farm. They are large and produce a lot but if a disease infects the farm it can spread quickly and cause a shortage of crop or livestock.
Here in PA we are very lucky for small family farms that supply produce and meat to our local stores!
Factory Farms
22
Modern farms and the transportation of the modern food supply chain relies heavily on tractors, irrigation systems, harvesters, trucks and more that all rely on burning fossil fuels for energy.
