The mutation changes the DNA from GLU to VAL, causing the substitution of glycine to lysine in the hemoglobin protein. This alters the structure of the hemoglobin, making the red blood cells to change from disc-shaped to round shaped cells. This new shape can increase blood flow, which increases oxygen flow to the body.
