Experience Objective(s)

Students will use appropriate tools to identify metals, nonmetals, and metalloids on the periodic table of elements using their physical properties and use data to explain the position and importance of rare earth elements.

What materials contributed to the development of the smartphone?

The first portable cell phone was introduced in 1973. The phone weighed about a kilogram, cost almost $4,000, and offered a half-hour of talk on a full battery charge. The materials used in today’s smartphones have changed a great deal since then.

5

SEP Develop Explanations

Based on your observations and prior knowledge, answer the question, What materials contributed to the development of smartphones? You can write an explanation or draw a picture with labels. You will revisit your explanation later in this Experience.

Now, we will write in our journal

Options (18)

Semi-Conductor that breaks when bent

Lustrous gold solid, highly conductive, malleable

Brittle

Shiny silver solid, excellent conductor, ductile

Heavy iron solid, magnetic, strong

Soft copper solid, good conductor, malleable

Durable aluminum solid, lightweight, corrosion-resistant

Dense lead solid, heavy, malleable

Colorless gas, essential for respiration

Soft, waxy solid, used in candles

Non-conductive, brittle solid, often used in fertilizers

Odorless gas, used in the production of ammonia

Liquid at room temperature, used as a solvent

Silicon solid, used in electronics, brittle

Germanium solid, semiconductor properties, shiny

Arsenic solid, metalloid, used in alloys

Antimony solid, brittle, used in flame retardants

Boron solid, hard, used in glass and ceramics

Organize these options into the right categories
