Modal verbs

By Jessica Scoullar

2

Modal verbs tell us if an action is:

Possible - can
Impossible - can't
Compulsory - must; have to
Forbidden - mustn't; can't
Optional - can; don't have to
A good idea/the right thing to do: should; ought
A bad idea/the wrong thing to do; shouldn't; oughtn't
uncertain - could; may; might; couldn't; mightn't; may not
certain in the future - will; shall
hypothetical (imagined) - would

3

Modal verbs go before the main verb

I go to the shops. - go is the main verb

I can go to the shops. = This is a possible action.

I should go to the shops. = This is a good idea

I can't go to the shops. = This is not a possible action.

I will go to the shops. = This is certainly going to happen

I might go to the shops. = I am not sure this is going to happen.

By changing the modal verb we change the how the speaker thinks about the action.
The main verb after a modal verb is always the infinitive (present simple).
