9.2.7 Data Displays
Learners can:
compare the various data displays explored within the unit
analyze and determine appropriate data displays for different types of data
explain the rationale behind choosing specific data representations based on the context of the data
2
There are numerous ways to collect data as well as ways to display data.
Two types of data include categorical data and quantitative data which is also known as numerical data.
3
A set of categorical data has results that are words or numbers that cannot be combined using mathematical operations.
Categorical data is sorted into groups or categories using names or labels.
4
A Venn diagram is a visual representation of the relationship between two or more sets of data. The diagrams represent the sets, their relationship, and sometimes operations performed on them.
A Venn diagram can be represented by any closed figure, but circles are usually used to represent each set.
Venn Diagram
5
A circle graph is a display of data in circular form used to represent the distribution of categorical data. It allows you to see the results of an investigation in a proportional manner.
Sometimes, a circle graph may not include all of the information you would like to have, but you can often use your math skills to determine the missing information.

Multiple Choice
A study was done about the two types of dogs at an animal shelter that are available for adoption.
Dog 1: 20 pounds, ears up, brown, black nose, long tail
Dog 2: 50 pounds, ears up, white, black nose, long tail
Which type of graph would best represent the data?
7
Quantitative data is numerical data that can be measured or counted.
A set of quantitative data has values that are numbers, such as values or measurements.
However, some numbers cannot be combined using operations, such as zip codes, street addresses, and phone numbers.
They are not quantitative data. It does not make sense to add two street addresses together.
8
There are several ways to display quantitative Data.
9
A dot plot represents each data point as a dot over its corresponding value on a number line.
Remember:
The data points are plotted from least to greatest.
Each data point is represented on the graph by a dot over the corresponding value.
You can quickly identify the data value that occurs the most as well as the data value that occurs the least.
Dot Plot
10
A histogram is a way to represent data on a number line where the values are grouped by ranges. The height of each bar indicates how many data values are in each range.
Histogram
11
Stem and leaf plots are data displays that organize values into two parts, a stem and a leaf.
Notice on the left of the vertical line that the digits in the tens place are arranged vertically from least to greatest.
These numbers are called the stem.
The digits after the stem are placed to the right of the corresponding stem. These numbers are called the leaf.
Stem-and-Leaf Plot
12
Data can be visually presented on a number line by using a box and two whiskers which is called a box and whisker plot.
The data is divided into four sections in a box and whisker plot.
The sides of the box represent the first and third quartiles.
A vertical line inside the box represents the median.
Horizontal lines outside the box, called whiskers, connect to the minimum and maximum values to the box.
Box and Whisker Plot
13
A scatter plot is a way to display data in which individual data points are plotted on the coordinate plane.
Once they are plotted you can see how, if at all, they are related by seeing how close they come to forming a straight line.
Scatter Plot
14
Multiple Choice
Which of the following scenarios represents quantitative data?
A data display showing the different types of fruits and their popularity ratings
A data display showing the monthly temperatures in a city over the course of a year
A data display illustrating the relationship between test scores and study hours for learners
A data display showing the distribution of ages in a population
15
When you try to decide how to display the data,
you can first consider the type of data: categorical or quantitative.
Then, you should consider the audience that you are hoping will review your data.
16
Match
Match the following
Data that is categorical and shows the percentage of participants in the study based on social class for a business meeting.
Data that is categorical and shows the relationship between two categories to be convincing in the newspaper.
Data that shows the exact points for a patient's results in order to make an informed decision
Quantitative data that shows the general trend for an educational meeting with nonexperts

Multiple Choice
Riley completed a survey to determine which grocery store people prefer to shop at and now wants to display the data showing the percentages of people who prefer each grocery store for a presentation to a marketing team at a business.
Which type of data does Riley want to display, and what is the best data display he should use?
Riley wants to display categorical data, and the best data display is a Venn diagram.
Riley wants to display quantitative data, and the best data display is a scatter plot.

Multiple Choice
Scientists observing different animals around an island decided to collect data to present to the community.
The animal data can be sorted into three categories: primarily eat meat, primarily eat plants, and eat both meat and plants.
Which data display can be used to best display the data collected?

Multiple Choice
A high school math teacher wants to illustrate the distribution of grades on a recent math test to their class. The test scores are distributed as follows:
20 students scored between 60 and 69
15 students scored between 70 and 79
10 students scored between 80 and 89, and
5 students scored between 90 and 100
Which type of data does the high school math teacher want to display, and what is the best data display she should use?
