What is a Main Idea?

  • The main idea is what a text is mostly about.

  • It is the most important point from the text.

How do you find the main idea of a story?

  • You can look at the title and pictures included in the story.

  • Sometimes the main idea is in the first or last sentence of a story.

  • You can look for words that are repeated multiple times in the story.

  • The things that help you find what a main idea of a text is are called Key Details.

  • Key details are the parts of a text that support the main idea.

  • Key details help you find out what the main idea is.

  • Key details can be the characters in a story, the setting of the story, or the events that happen.
