Technical Reading Passage: How Solar Panels Work
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using a process called the photovoltaic effect. Each panel is made up of solar cells, typically composed of silicon. When sunlight hits a solar cell, it knocks electrons loose from their atoms. These electrons flow through the cell, generating an electric current.
To install a solar panel system, first choose a location that receives direct sunlight most of the day—typically a roof or open field. Next, mount the panels using metal frames and brackets. Then, connect the panels to an inverter, which transforms the electricity from direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) for household use. Finally, link the inverter to your electrical panel so the solar power can be distributed throughout your home.
Maintaining a solar panel system involves cleaning the panels every few months to ensure maximum efficiency. Many systems also include monitoring software to check performance and spot issues early.

Technical Reading Passage: How 3D Printers Work
A 3D printer creates three-dimensional objects by adding material layer by layer. This process is called additive manufacturing. First, a digital model of the object is created using computer-aided design (CAD) software. The file is then sliced into thin horizontal layers and sent to the printer.
The printer heats plastic filament—usually polylactic acid (PLA) or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)—until it melts. The material is extruded through a small nozzle that moves along the X, Y, and Z axes. As the nozzle moves, it deposits the melted plastic precisely where it's needed, building the object one layer at a time.
To ensure a successful print, the build plate must be level and clean. Complex prints may require support structures, which can be removed after the object cools. Finished prints often need sanding or painting for smoothness and visual appeal.
