Rounding rules

Look at the digit to the right of the place you're rounding to:

  • If it’s 0–4, round DOWN. (Keep the digit the same)

  • If it’s 5–9, round UP. (Add 1 to the digit you're rounding)

Rounding whole numbers Example

Round 4,762 to the nearest hundred:

  • Find the hundreds place → 7 (700)

  • Look to the right → 6 (tens)

  • Since 6 is 5 or more, round up → 4,800

Rounding Decimals Example

Round 3.486 to the nearest hundredth:

  • Find the hundredths place → 8

  • Look to the right → 6 (thousandths)

  • Since 6 is 5 or more, round up → 3.49
