What is a Shadow?

  • A shadow is a dark area formed when an object blocks light. It appears on the side opposite to the light source.

No light = shadow formed.

How is a Shadows Formed?

  • A light travels in a straight line.

  • When an opaque object blocks light, a shadow is created.

  • Example: Hand under sunlight.

Clarity of Shadows

  • Clear (Sharp) Shadow:

    • Formed when the light source is small or near.

    • Example: Torchlight close to the object.

  • Blurred (Faint) Shadow:

    • Formed when the light source is large or far.

    • Example: Cloudy day sunlight.
