Week 1. Lesson 2:
Texture revision

By Cameron Spike-Porter

2

Revision: What is Texture?

Texture in music refers to how the different layers of sound (such as melodies, harmonies, and rhythms) are combined and interact. It describes whether music sounds thin or thick, and how many instruments or voices are playing and what roles they have.

3

Revision: types of Texture:

  • Monophonic – A single melody line with no accompaniment. Example: someone singing alone.

  • Homophonic – A main melody supported by chords or accompaniment. Example: a singer with guitar chords.

  • Polyphonic – Two or more independent melodies happening at the same time. Example: a round like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" sung by multiple voices.
