To Space and Back: The Journey of Sally Ride
In 1983, Sally Ride made history when she became the first American woman to travel into space. Sally had always loved science and wanted to explore new discoveries beyond Earth. She became an astronaut because she wanted to help scientists learn more about space and inspire future explorers. Before liftoff, Sally and her team prepared carefully. They went through safety checks, put on their space suits, and practiced the important steps they would need during the mission. On launch day, they climbed aboard the space shuttle Challenger and blasted off into orbit, traveling in a big circle around Earth. During the mission, Sally and the other astronauts launched satellites and studied our planet from above. One of the most amazing things Sally saw was the view of Earth from space. She saw bright blue oceans, swirling white clouds, and glowing city lights far below. Because the shuttle orbited Earth so quickly, the astronauts could see 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets every day. When Sally returned to Earth, she wanted to share her experience with others, teaching people what it felt like to float in space and why space travel is important for discovering more about our planet.
