-ing with verbs

General rule:


For most verbs, simply add "-ing" to the end.

walk - walking, eat - eating

-ing with verbs

Verbs Ending in "e":

If a verb ends in a silent "e", drop the "e" and add "-ing".

make - making, write - writing

-ing with verbs

Verbs Ending in "ie":

If a verb ends in "ie", change the "ie" to "y" and add "-ing"

lie - lying, die - dying

-ing with verbs

CVC (consonant + vowel + consonant) Pattern:

If a one-syllable verb ends in a consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant before adding "-ing".

run - running, stop - stopping

-ing with verbs

CVC (consonant + vowel + consonant) Pattern:

If the verb has more than one syllable and the stress is on the final syllable, double the final consonant.

begin - beginning; however, listen - listening (NOT listenning)

-ing with verbs

CVC (consonant + vowel + consonant) Pattern:

Final consonants w, x, and y are not doubled.

play - playing, fix - fixing
