Spelling Rules for Regular Verbs in the Past Tense

1. Verbs ending in -e

• Rule: Just add -d

• Examples:

  • love → loved - bake → baked - smile → smiled

2. Verbs ending in a consonant + y

• Rule: Change y to i and add -ed

• Examples:

  • carry → carried - study → studied - worry → worried

But if the verb ends in a vowel + y (like "play"), just add -ed: play → played
