Dos (Greetings & respect)

  • Greet with a polite nod or handshake (not too firm)

  • Address people using titles & surnames
    (e.g., Mr. Wang, 王老师, 王先生/女士)

  • Show respect to elders & teachers first

Dos (Dining etiquette)

  • Wait for the host to start eating first

  • Try a bit of every dish offered to show appreciation

  • Place chopsticks neatly on the chopstick rest (not in the bowl)

  • Toasting: If you clink glasses, hold your glass slightly lower than the elder/host

  • Do not waste food, pass excess food to other tables

  • *Check for food allergy before eating

  • Gifts may be politely refused once or twice before accepted (it’s a sign of humility)

  • Avoid giving clocks, white flowers, or sharp objects as gifts (associated with funerals or separation)

  • Avoid the number 4 (sounds like “death” in Chinese)

  • Don’t talk openly about politics, government criticism, or sensitive topics (e.g., Taiwan, Tibet)

  • Pay attention to safety at all times. Comply with all instructions given by guides/teachers

  • Look out for one another & inform the teacher if you/your friend is not well

  • Stay in your groups. Do not move away from your group. Always inform your group leader if you need to leave the group eg. for the toilet. Go in pairs

  • Do not buy or bring home any banned items or contraband eg., weapon/sharp objects/Vietnam war artefacts. If unsure, check with the teachers before you buy anything.

  • Take good care of the room / the room keys / hotel property. Do NOT remove anything from the room. 

  • Always lock the door. If you hear knocking/the doorbell, CHECK that you know who the person is before opening.
