Questions in Spanish:
These are our "base" questions. We can change them to address or be about any subject. To change who we are talking to/about, we need to change both the subject pronoun and the verb conjugation (we will learn this part later).

¿Cómo estás (tú)? - How are you?
¿Cómo te llamas (tú)? - What is your name?
¿Cuántos años tienes (tú)? - How old are you?
¿De dónde eres (tú)? - Where are you from?
¿Quién es (él)? - Who is that?

Spanish:
The Verb SER

By Maddie Gomez

Open Ended

In your own words, what is a verb?

53

Qué es un verbo?

  • A verb is an action word.

  • It describes an action that someone or a group of people are doing.

  • Some examples of English verbs we use every day...

  • To run

  • To talk

  • To eat

  • To sleep

54

What is a subject pronoun?

  • Pronouns are words that take the place of nouns.

  • SUBJECT PRONOUNS indicate who is being described or who does the action in the sentence.

  • Instead of saying "Marcos and Juan", you could just say: "they"

  • Instead of saying "my brothers and I", you could just say: "we"

  • Instead of saying "you, Benito, and Maria", you could just say: "you all"

  • Instead of saying "Caterina" or "Rodrigo", you could just say: "he" or "she"

58

Conjugations

  • In English, we don't really conjugate our verbs.

  • I walk

  • You walk

  • We walk

  • WALK doesn't really change regardless of who is doing the action.

  • In Spanish, we MUST conjugate to differentiate more clearly WHO is doing the verb.

59

The verb ser means “to be”Just as “to be” has an irregular conjugation in English (I am, you are, he/she is…), the verb ser is very irregular in Spanish. Therefore, it is important that you memorize it! When you change the verb depending on the subject, you are conjugating the verb. In Spanish to conjugate verbs, you will give them a different form for each of the six subject pronouns.
